Lithium Battery Nail Penetration Test

High-speed dynamic testingHigh-speed camera

The lithium battery nail penetration test is an extreme-condition test simulating a battery being punctured by a sharp external object. It is essential for evaluating lithium battery safety, helping identify potential hazards when the battery suffers physical damage, such as internal short circuits, fire, or explosion. To ensure battery safety, the test requires precise monitoring of the strain and displacement of the battery case during nail penetration.

Combining monocular 3D DIC technology with high-speed imaging, the Haytham monocular 3D high-speed visual strain gauge captures the deformation of the lithium battery case during nail penetration with extremely high precision and frame rate. The instrument generates full-field strain maps and displacement data, providing reliable data support for in-depth analysis of the stress concentration regions and deformation modes of the battery case under penetration.

In the nail penetration test, the lithium battery was fixed on the test fixture and the nail was driven into the battery case at a constant speed. The Haytham monocular 3D high-speed visual strain gauge captured the deformation of the battery case during penetration in real time through the high-speed camera. The data acquired include the full-field strain distribution before and after penetration, case displacement, and the evolution of stress concentration regions.

By analyzing the full-field strain data generated during penetration, engineers can identify stress concentration points and possible failure locations of the battery case under load. The strain maps show the strain distribution of the case at different stages, helping assess whether internal short circuits or structural damage will occur after nail penetration. These data are vital for understanding battery safety under extreme conditions, optimizing battery case design, and improving overall safety.
