Unmarked Compression Deformation Measurement of Composite Materials

Compression deformation measurementDIC technology

In compression testing of composite materials, some surfaces are uniform in color and weak in texture, lacking stable, recognizable natural features. Conventional measurement approaches that rely on speckle patterns or markers are complex to implement and may affect the surface condition and loading behavior of the material. Meanwhile, contact extensometers under compression are prone to interference from end-face friction, specimen micro-buckling, and other factors, making it difficult to obtain true, reliable deformation data. To meet this testing need, Haytham Technology has introducedfeatureless vision measurement solution for compression deformation, providing composite materials with a stable non-contact measurement method.

Based on high-resolution industrial imaging and vision-based displacement analysis algorithms, the solution tracks the specimen's outline and surface grayscale information with fine precision to compute displacement and axial strain during compressive loading, without applying speckle or artificial markers. The measurement process leaves the specimen surface untouched, avoiding problems such as coating flaking or poor adhesion, and is particularly suitable for continuous-fiber composites, laminates, and engineering composites with stringent surface requirements.
