Full-Field Strain Measurement of Weldments in Compression

Weld seam strain analysisDIC full-field strain measurement

In compression testing of welded components, customers care not only about whether the structure eventually buckles, but also about how strain accumulates before instability, whether strain concentration appears prematurely near the weld, and the differences in deformation among the base metal, weld, and heat-affected zones.

Welded components differ from ordinary homogeneous specimens. Because welding alters the local microstructure and mechanical properties of the material, the weld, base metal, and heat-affected zone do not respond identically under loading. Single-point methods such as conventional strain gauges capture only local data, making it hard to judge the overall deformation distribution and easy to miss critical weak regions.

Haytham Based on DIC vision measurement technology, a non-contact full-field strain measurement solution is provided for compression testing of welded components. Through image acquisition and algorithmic analysis, the system outputs the displacement and strain fields on the component surface in real time, visually presenting how deformation evolves in different regions during compressive loading.

With full-field measurement results, customers can observe whether local deformation occurs prematurely in the weld zone, whether strain concentrates in the heat-affected zone, and whether distinct deformation evolution appears before the structure becomes unstable. These data support structural design verification, welding process optimization, load-bearing capacity evaluation, and failure mechanism analysis.

Compared with single-point measurement, DIC full-field strain measurement presents the loading process of welded structures from a holistic perspective, helping R&D and testing personnel clearly judge where problems originate, how deformation develops, and where the weak regions of the structure are.
