Tensile Deformation Measurement of 0.3mm Fiber Filament

Video extensometerMaterial tensile deformation measurement

In tensile deformation measurement of fiber filaments with a diameter of about 0.3 mm, the specimen is slender and low in stiffness, the grip zone is prone to slippage or shear damage, and the effective gauge length is short with small displacement, so conventional contact extensometers are difficult to install and easily impose additional constraint on the specimen, distorting results. Addressing the testing characteristics of such micro specimens, an optical vision measurement / video extensometer solution acquires deformation data throughout the tensile process without contacting the specimen, and is more suitable for tensile testing of fibers, fine metal wires, and single-fiber composites.

The measurement approach is typically to place miniature marker points in the gauge length region and continuously record changes in marker spacing through a high-magnification lens and a high-resolution camera to compute axial strain and elongation. Compared with using crosshead displacement alone, optical measurement effectively avoids errors caused by fixture compliance and system backlash; compared with single-point displacement sensors, it also enables synchronized measurement of multiple gauge lengths, making it easier to identify grip-end slippage and local strain anomalies.
