Monocular 3D Video Extensometer
Silicon nitride column composite materials are widely used in aerospace and electronics thanks to their excellent high-temperature performance and mechanical strength. The compression performance of this material is critical to its stability and safety in practical applications. However, because silicon nitride column composites have a complex structure and brittle characteristics, conventional contact strain measurement methods may face problems such as insufficient measurement accuracy and data interference in compression testing.
1. Testing Process
To accurately measure the strain distribution of the silicon nitride column composite during compression, the test team conducted the experiment with the Haytham monocular 3D video extensometer. First, the silicon nitride column composite specimen was mounted on the compression testing machine. The extensometer monitored the surface deformation of the specimen in real time during compression through a single camera.

Using digital image correlation (DIC) technology, the device precisely computes the 3D strain distribution by analyzing minute displacement changes on the specimen surface. Due to the brittleness of silicon nitride, a conventional contact extensometer could damage the specimen or produce inaccurate data, while the non-contact measurement of the Haytham monocular 3D video extensometer avoids these potential problems.
During the compression test, the device records strain changes in real time under different load conditions. Especially when the specimen approaches fracture, the device captures key strain concentration regions, providing important data support for understanding the fracture mechanism of the material.

2. Test Results
With the Haytham monocular 3D video extensometer, the full-field strain data of the silicon nitride column composite in the compression test were successfully obtained. The device precisely captured the deformation behavior of the specimen during compression, including elastic deformation in the initial compression stage, stress concentration at critical strain, and the final fracture mode. These data provide an important reference for evaluating the performance of silicon nitride column composites in practical applications.
