Bridge Slab Pressing Fatigue Test

DIC systemDigital image correlation (DIC)

When bridge slabs bear long-term repeated loads, fatigue damage gradually accumulates inside the material and may eventually lead to structural failure. Traditional fatigue testing methods usually rely on contact sensors, which need to be mounted directly on the slab surface. However, for large and complex bridge slabs, this contact measurement approach involves many inconveniences and limitations. Installing sensors is not only complicated and time-consuming, but may also disturb the surface condition of the slab and affect measurement accuracy.

The Haytham DIC visual strain gauge effectively solves these problems through non-contact measurement. The device uses high-resolution cameras to capture images of the slab surface and then analyzes the images with DIC technology to precisely calculate the strain distribution on the slab surface. This non-contact measurement avoids the interference brought by traditional sensors, ensuring the authenticity and accuracy of the test data. This advantage is particularly significant in fatigue testing, which requires continuous long-term monitoring of subtle material changes, where any external disturbance may affect the reliability of the final results.

During press fatigue testing, the bridge slab undergoes repeated application and release of pressure, and the Haytham DIC visual strain gauge records the strain changes on the slab surface throughout the process. Unlike traditional point measurement, the instrument provides full-field strain measurement that fully covers the test area. Such full-field data allow researchers to analyze the strain distribution in detail, and the technology proves especially effective in detecting and tracking the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks. These data are essential for understanding the fatigue behavior of the material and predicting its life.

In addition, the Haytham DIC visual strain gauge offers high-precision measurement capability and can capture the tiny deformations of the slab surface during cyclic loading. This capability allows researchers to identify the cumulative damage inside the material and assess its potential impact on the overall structural performance.

The device also features powerful real-time data processing. During the test, researchers can observe and analyze the strain condition of the bridge slab in real time through a visualization interface. This immediate feedback allows researchers to adjust experimental parameters or testing methods in time according to the test conditions, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of the testing process.
