Applications of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) Technology in Laboratory Testing

Published: 2025-04-09

Digital image correlation (DIC) is an efficient, non-contact deformation measurement method that has become an indispensable tool in modern mechanics experiments. By analyzing changes in object surface images, DIC can precisely measure the deformation, displacement and strain of objects during loading. This technology provides high-precision data in various experiments, especially suitable for complex scenarios that traditional methods cannot easily measure.

DIC technology is to apply a random pattern or markers on the test object surface, then capture images of the object under different loading states. By comparing the marker position changes in different images, DIC computes the displacement field of the object surface. Further analysis of these displacement data yields the strain field. These data are of great significance for engineering design, material research and structural analysis.

For example, in building structural monitoring, DIC can monitor the deformation of buildings and bridges under loads, helping engineers evaluate structural safety and stability. In material tests, DIC can record in real time the surface strain distribution of materials during tension or compression, providing data support for new material development.

Compared with traditional mechanical measurement methods such as strain gauges,DIC technology has obvious advantages. First, it is non-contact, avoiding measurement errors caused by contact in traditional methods. Second, DIC can capture displacement data of multiple points simultaneously, obtaining more comprehensive deformation information. In addition, DIC provides high spatial resolution down to the sub-millimeter level, ideal for precise measurement of tiny deformation.

Nevertheless, implementing DIC requires certain equipment conditions, such as high-resolution cameras and a stable lighting environment. Moreover, DIC's post-processing is rather complex and needs professional software for analysis. Therefore, in application, appropriate equipment and software should be selected according to specific needs.
