Practical Experience in Improving the Accuracy of Stereo DIC Synchronous Calibration

Published: 2025-08-11

Instereo DIC systemIn stereo DIC system calibration, accuracy directly affects the credibility of 3D topography and strain data. Synchronous calibration includes geometric calibration and time synchronization; insufficient accuracy in either causes measurement error. To achieve higher DIC synchronous calibration accuracy, optimization is needed in optics, mechanical installation and signal control.

First is the optical system. Low-distortion lenses significantly reduce geometric calibration errors, with obvious advantages especially in large field-of-view or high-resolution measurement. Lenses and cameras should be calibrated in a constant-temperature environment to prevent intrinsic parameter changes caused by temperature drift.

Next is the calibration board shooting strategy. Many beginners photograph the board only at limited angles, causing unstable exterior parameter solutions. Experience shows that at least 15-20 sets of calibration images at different positions and angles should be captured, ensuring the board covers the entire measurement area — this effectively improves 3D reconstruction accuracy.

For time synchronization, hardware triggering is recommended. Software synchronization is convenient but often has unpredictable delays in high-speed motion measurement, affecting stereo DIC synchronous calibration. Hardware triggering can control synchronization error at the microsecond level, which is crucial for high-speed impact tests or vibration tests.

Verification cannot be omitted either. After calibration, test with high-precision gauge blocks of known size and judge system accuracy by comparing measured and true values. If the error is too large, check whether the calibration board feature extraction is accurate, whether the camera synchronization signal is delayed, and whether the lens distortion model matches.

In engineering scenarios such as composite failure tests and aero-engine blade vibration tests, stereo DIC Optimized calibration significantly improves the reliability of 3D strain measurement. DIC systems based on high-precision synchronous calibration are becoming one of the core tools in structural health monitoring and material mechanics research.
