Warm congratulations to the Tianjin University research team on publishing their latest results in Nature!This research achieved a milestone improvement in lithium metal battery energy density at the pouch cell and module levels, opening a new path for the development of high-energy-density batteries.
Lithium metal batteries, whose energy density far exceeds that of traditional lithium-ion batteries, are regarded as the core direction of electric vehicle energy storage. However, electrolyte design has long been constrained by the solvent-dominated/anion-dominated dichotomy: sacrificing either interface conduction or bulk transport, making it difficult to balance performance.

Recently,The Tianjin University team published its latest results in Nature, proposing a delocalized electrolyte design strategy.Through AI-driven screening, the research team constructed a disordered solvation microenvironment combining the advantages of solvents and anions, significantly reducing the Li⁺ desolvation and migration energy barriers, and achieving simultaneous improvement of interface stability and bulk transport performance.
Key result data:
▪ 5.5 Ah pouch cell: energy density 604.2 Wh/kg, 100 cycles;
▪ 5.2 Ah pouch cell: energy density 618.2 Wh/kg, 90 cycles;
▪ 3.9 kWh module: energy density 480.9 Wh/kg, stable cycling for 25 cycles.
This is the first international breakthrough of 600 Wh/kg and 480 Wh/kg at the pouch cell and module levels respectively. Compared with existing lithium-ion batteries, energy density and endurance are improved 2-3 times, which has a major impact on the global battery research landscape.
In the safety verification stage, the research team usedHaytham thermal-strain coupled testing system, achieving synchronized monitoring of the temperature field and strain field.The system can precisely align infrared temperature data withDIC strain data in the same coordinate system, intuitively revealing the thermal-mechanical coupling behavior of batteries in nail penetration experiments, providing key support for reliability evaluation of electrolyte design.
